Safari 4 Hidden Preferences

Posted by Michael on Feb 25, 2009 in Rumors, Site News, Software, Web

The beta version of Safari version 4 is all the rage on the web right now, and for good reason. It is light, fast, and works well. But it also include a bunch of user interface changes that you may not like. Now, thanks to the guys over at Swedish Campground, you can set some of those interface deviations back the way you want them.

Using the tweaks detailed in this Swedish Campground article, you can move the tabs off the top of the browser, get rid of the Cover Flow view in bookmarks, and a get rid of the Google suggest menu, and a number of other changes. All of the adjustments will require a bit of typing, or copy and pasting, at the command line, but if those new design elements bother you then they are well worth it.

Apple on Tuesday announced a public beta of Safari 4, a new version of its share-gaining web browser that packs a powerful new JavaScript engine and support for the latest web standards.

safaripicDubbed “Nitro,” the engine in Safari 4 is said to run JavaScript 4.2 times faster than Safari 3. Other new features include Top Sites, for a visual preview of frequently visited pages; Full History Search, to search through titles, web addresses and the complete text of recently viewed pages; Cover Flow, to easily flip through web history or bookmarks; and Tabs on Top, to make tabbed browsing easier and more intuitive.

“Apple created Safari to bring innovation, speed and open standards back into web browsers, and today it takes another big step forward,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Safari 4 is the fastest and most efficient browser for Mac and Windows, with great integration of HTML 5 and CSS 3 web standards that enables the next generation of interactive web applications.”

Snow Leopard Screen Shots

Posted by Michael on Jun 22, 2008 in Software, Web

Even though the next version of Mac OS x was only announced less about two weeks ago, leaked screen shots of a “Snow Leopard” test build show the ability to create web apps in Safari 4 and an update to Address Book with hooks into Microsoft Exchange.

OSX Snow Leopard

The new test build, documented by German website Apfeltalk (with translation by Engadget), offers a “Save as Web Application” menu item in Safari that creates a complete version of the website that can potentially be used offline and without the overhead of normal web browser.

Similar to web app icons for the iPhone’s home screen, the feature is intended to improve access to online productivity apps like Google Docs or Photoshop Express, which can substitute for some dedicated programs on the desktop.

Apple’s Safari Could Hit Mozilla Hard

Posted by Michael on Mar 26, 2008 in Software, Web

Apple’s decision to offer its own Safari Web browser as a software update for its popular iTunes music service and QuickTime video software could hit rival Mozilla’s Firefox browser hard.

That’s the word from solution providers reacting to Apple’s controversial decision to tightly tie its music and video software for the first time with its Safari Web browser. The move comes with the first version of the five-year-old Safari Macintosh browser released for the more dominant Windows market. That Macintosh version, released on March 18, apparently triggered Apple to offer Safari as software update for iTunes and QuickTime.

“This could be a fairly substantial blow to Mozilla’s Firefox,” said Tyler Dikman, CEO of Cooltronics, a Tampa, Fla. solution provider, reacting to Apple’s decision to push Safari version 3.1 for Windows XP/Vista and Mac OS X to users as an update. “Even if Safari gets 10 percent share on PC browsers that’s pretty significant. I don’t think it will put anyone out of business, but it sends a serious wake up call that Firefox isn’t the only browser that’s different. It shows that there is another player in the game and a lot of money to be made in the browser business.”

New Safari Version

Posted by Michael on Mar 18, 2008 in Software, Web

Apple has updated their Safari web browser. They claim that Safari is the “fastest web browser on any platform, Safari loads pages up to 3 times faster than Firefox 2 and up to 5.5 times faster than Opera 9.” Additionally, they say “it executes JavaScript up to 4.5 times faster than Firefox 2 and up to 5 times faster than Opera 9. What does all that mean for you? Less time loading pages and more time enjoying them.”

This update, Version 3.1 is available now from Apple’s site. The upgrade is available for both Windows and OS X Leopard and Tiger. No change though in Safari for the iPhone.
