MacBreak Dev

Posted by Michael on Sep 9, 2008 in Learning, Web

There is a new video podcast on the web that will be of interest to all developers and those on the geeky side. MacBreak Dev is in its second episode now. Join Alex Lindsay and the rest of the MacBreak team as they dive deep into developer tools that can re-shape your Mac.

In the first episode Keith Lang stops in to show us how to adapt a Wiimote for a 3D experience. In the second installment, Lang shows us how to control time with sound in Quartz Composer. Both sound good, and I can’t wait to see how this show develops over the coming months.

Just received this from the Apple MobileMe team…

We have already made many improvements to MobileMe, but we still have many more to make. To recognize our users’ patience, we are giving every MobileMe subscriber as of today a free 60 day extension. This is in addition to the one month extension most subscribers have already received. We are working very hard to make MobileMe a great service we can all be proud of. We know that MobileMe’s launch has not been our finest hour, and we truly appreciate your patience as we turn this around. Read this article for more details.

How MobileMe Filters Spam

Posted by Michael on Jul 12, 2008 in Web, iPhone

In a new support article, Apple details how the new MobileMe service (which seems to finally be coming up) filters spam messages. This can be particularly useful information if you are trying to figure out where a missing message is.

There is also a short article on MobileMe email message bouncing back after sending and MobileMe email messages not being received by a recipient.

Again, good stuff if you are trying to troubleshoot the new service.

Snow Leopard Screen Shots

Posted by Michael on Jun 22, 2008 in Software, Web

Even though the next version of Mac OS x was only announced less about two weeks ago, leaked screen shots of a “Snow Leopard” test build show the ability to create web apps in Safari 4 and an update to Address Book with hooks into Microsoft Exchange.

OSX Snow Leopard

The new test build, documented by German website Apfeltalk (with translation by Engadget), offers a “Save as Web Application” menu item in Safari that creates a complete version of the website that can potentially be used offline and without the overhead of normal web browser.

Similar to web app icons for the iPhone’s home screen, the feature is intended to improve access to online productivity apps like Google Docs or Photoshop Express, which can substitute for some dedicated programs on the desktop.

From Win32 to Cocoa

Posted by Michael on Apr 23, 2008 in Web

A very interesting article posted on ArsTechnica about making the switch from programming for the Windows platform to the OS X platform. More than that though, there is some good background on the histories of each and the mind frames behind them.

You have to love these quotes. First, about the shoddy state of Windows software, “Most Windows applications—from both major software companies and minor ones alike—are ugly, poorly-thought-out, clunky pieces of crap. While there are a few artisan developers for Windows, most Windows devs just don’t care.” And in contrast, there is this about Mac software, “Mac developers don’t seem to be like that. They’re not producing software for big corporations, so of course we don’t see the same disinterested developers developing for Mac. Sure, this is “bad” in that it means that Apple has no penetration into the business world. But it’s also great, because it means that the apps that people write for OS X are more likely to be of high quality.”

Great, thorough, and very interesting article. Check it out!

Apple’s Safari Could Hit Mozilla Hard

Posted by Michael on Mar 26, 2008 in Software, Web

Apple’s decision to offer its own Safari Web browser as a software update for its popular iTunes music service and QuickTime video software could hit rival Mozilla’s Firefox browser hard.

That’s the word from solution providers reacting to Apple’s controversial decision to tightly tie its music and video software for the first time with its Safari Web browser. The move comes with the first version of the five-year-old Safari Macintosh browser released for the more dominant Windows market. That Macintosh version, released on March 18, apparently triggered Apple to offer Safari as software update for iTunes and QuickTime.

“This could be a fairly substantial blow to Mozilla’s Firefox,” said Tyler Dikman, CEO of Cooltronics, a Tampa, Fla. solution provider, reacting to Apple’s decision to push Safari version 3.1 for Windows XP/Vista and Mac OS X to users as an update. “Even if Safari gets 10 percent share on PC browsers that’s pretty significant. I don’t think it will put anyone out of business, but it sends a serious wake up call that Firefox isn’t the only browser that’s different. It shows that there is another player in the game and a lot of money to be made in the browser business.”
