Apple has realeased a list of the TCP and UDP ports used by Apple products, such as Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server, AppleShare IP, Network Assistant, Apple Remote Desktop, Macintosh Manager, and MobileMe. Many of these are referred to as “well known,” industry standard ports, but others are machine or implementation specific and could impact the operation of your applications.
For the full list, check out this resource on the Apple site.

Today Apple announced the Apple Ultra-compact USB Power Adapter Exchange program. Replacement adapters will be available starting Friday, October 10, 2008. There are two ways to exchange your current ultra-compact Apple USB power adapter for a new, redesigned adapter:
- Order a replacement adapter via the web. These replacement adapters will ship within three weeks of your order, starting on Friday, October 10.
- Exchange your adapter at an Apple Retail Store starting on October 10.
Apple has determined that under certain conditions the new ultra-compact Apple USB power adapter’s metal prongs can break off and remain in a power outlet, creating a risk of electric shock. We have received reports of detached blades involving a very small percentage of the adapters sold, but no injuries have been reported.

For full details and to determine if you unit is one of those effected, check this Apple site. This only applies to 3G adapters, not those sold with the original phones.

Don’t forget that one of the really good ways to get Apple products at discount is by buying refurbished / certified direct from Apple. These items are Apple certified, and as good as new. You can save on a certified refurbished Mac, iMac, iPod, iPhones and just about everything else. Everything over $50 still qualifies for free shipping too!

Of course, since these items are refurbished, the stock changes with the availability. But usually there is a pretty good selection. I have been buying my Macs and iPods refurbished for a couple of years now and have never noticed the difference from new.

Along with the recent upgrades to the iMac line come updates to the developer notes. This developer note gives a technical description of the 20” iMac computer and the 24” iMac computer incorporating the Intel Core 2 Duo processor on 45 nm process technology and introduced in April 2008, to help developers design products compatible with these computers. The note provides information about the computers’ internal design, input-output features, and expansion capabilities.

No, there is nothing earth-shattering or revolutionary revealed. But the iMac developer notes are worth a review.
And don’t forget that you can read the developer notes on all Apple hardware. No quote the intro, “Apple’s computers integrate accepted industry-standard technologies such as USB with Apple technologies such as FireWire to create high-performance machines that are easy to use. Developers can extend the capabilities of these computers by creating compatible peripheral devices, video cards, RAM, and other add-on products.”
